History

Founded in 2000, Santa Barbara Graduate Institute (SBGI) offered the world’s first graduate degrees in prenatal and perinatal psychology and the first doctoral degrees in somatic psychology.

These distinct yet related disciplines center on the premise that our minds and our bodies are inextricably linked and that we must therefore consider the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) if we are to effect deep and lasting change in people’s lives. This holistic perspective often requires practitioners to integrate the best of traditional treatment methodologies and established clinical practice with the best of alternative approaches to health and healing—a pioneering, integrative approach for which SBGI has become known.
